In Linux PDF printing is a native function and requires no silly purchases of proprietary software like Adobe Acrobat. This HOWTO will show you how to setup a PDF printer on your Debian System so that you can print any document to a PDF file.

Step-by-step HOWTO

First you'll need to install cups-pdf by running the following in a Linux shell:

apt-get install cups-pdf

If there are any dependencies required they'll be installed along with the cups-pdf package.

Once completed you need to setup the printer in Gnome as follows. Go to:

System--> Administration--> Printing

This will bring up a list of printers and in here you'll see an icon Add Printer

Now follow the steps as defined below:

Select "Local Printer" and use a "detected printer --> PDF printer".
Manufacturer --> Generic,
Model --> postscript color printer rev4,
Driver --> Standard
Apply

Your new PDF printer should now be added to the list of printers. To check that it's working do the following:

Right-click on printer and select Properties
Click the button Print a Test Page
The file should be in your Home folder, under the PDF folder
